Artificial grass has become extremely popular in recent years — not only because it looks realistic and requires little upkeep, but also because many homeowners spend more time improving their gardens. With millions of square meters installed every year, its environmental impact has naturally become a topic of public discussion.

Below is a clear and balanced look at how artificial grass affects the environment and, most importantly, what can be done to reduce that impact.


Artificial Grass vs. Natural Grass: Environmental Pros and Cons

Both artificial and natural lawns have advantages and drawbacks.

Artificial Grass: Concerns

Studies highlight several environmental issues:

  • It blocks access to soil for insects, reducing biodiversity.

  • Poorly made systems may restrict drainage.

  • Manufacturing synthetics requires energy and generates emissions.

  • Installation infills (depending on material) may affect soil or water systems.

Natural Grass: Not Without Issues

Although real grass supports wildlife, its maintenance also has an environmental cost:

  • Ask whether the grass can be recycled.

  • Confirm where old turf is taken after removal.

  • Request environmental certifications or compliance documents.

  • Prefer local or EU-based production, where standards are stricter.

3. Use a shock pad or stabilising base layer

Installing a shock-absorbing pad beneath the grass reduces the amount of infill needed. Since infill makes up a large portion of the turf system, reducing it lowers environmental impact considerably.

4. Opt for systems that improve drainage and protect soil

Some base layers or tiles are designed to:

  • reduce excavation

  • buffer rainwater

  • allow gradual infiltration into the soil

Good drainage prevents runoff problems and helps maintain healthier subsoil conditions beneath the lawn.

5. Integrate natural elements around the lawn

Even if part of the garden uses artificial turf, biodiversity can still thrive:

  • Plant native flowering species for bees.
